What does the gig or freelance economy mean to you
The Gig and the freelance economy are here to stay, and it is shaping the future of work
If you haven’t heard or don’t know much about it, then you need to familiarise yourself with it. “Jobs for life” and job security days are long gone. as harsh as this might sound I share my experience and what I have learned being a freelancer and part of the growing gig economy
We are hearing this word often particularly post-pandemic and it was mentioned in many sessions World Economic Forum
Let’s explain what the mean gig economy.
It is a labour market that relies heavily on temporary and part-time positions filled by independent contractors and freelancers rather than full-time permanent employees. As a Gig worker, you gain flexibility and independence but little or no job security for now. (Investopedia)
There is a misconception about being self-employed, but from my experience, it was the best. Yes, you work alone but you manage your time, your finance and the place where you want to work.
The future of work is the gig/freelance economy it is here to stay.
In my opinion after the pandemic, people want to achieve a work-life balance, there is no job security and the job market is changing at a rapid pace that requires constant upskilling/reskilling.
My experience of being a freelancer with a new perspective after exploring the world. This is what I have learned
The advantages of being part of the gig/freelance economy
- Freedom and flexibility. You chose the job, location, hours/your time
- You are responsible for your own finances, this requires great discipline
- You learn more since you are independent
- You are comfortable with change, and you are adaptable
- You have more time to do what you are good at or passionate about
- You make use of all your skills which is a bonus
What you need to do in order you succeed in the gig economy
- You need to know yourself before you get used to the unknown and adapt to it.
- To be comfortable with continuous learning every job will require a positive attitude, creative and open mind
I have shared it based on own experience and I am so glad that I have gone that route. It does involve a lot of learning and requires adaptability.
