Want to Reach your Goals? My Secret
Have you ever written to your future self and when you read it, it was actually what happened to you if not better?
This happened to me last year!
I will share with you the importance of regularly reviewing your goals rather than the typical way of making big unreasonable goals that most of us don’t stick to.
In December 2021.
I have written to myself and my shock when I read it a year later it was so true
I will share it with you later, but let me tell you the best way that has worked for me to stick to my goals every year this is my 6th year. It is really simple no complicated ways.
Keep it simple.
First and foremost, make them small and reasonable for example go to bed an hour early instead of 12 or 1 and go to bed at 11 pm. Adding a new simple routine drinking more water or reading an extra page from your book etc
Review your goals: daily, weekly, monthly, every 4 months and 6 months.
This is how you can start?
Write it down
This is how you start making a simple list the night before and letting your brain do the work while you sleep, this does wonders for you to wake up with new ideas.
At the end of the day, you can go through it or even halfway through the day not necessarily big tasks, just simple ones.
Believe me, small ideas lead to big ones, remember this is a way for you to start.
Journaling goes a long way
I never believed in it before I started by chance I bought a simple planner that included a journaling section where you can review your day, week, and month then I slowly started to write my thoughts and I also started sharing my content on my social media Instagram at that time.
The lesson for me here is writing can help, writing your thoughts and plans, starts with a practice that will turn into a habit, a healthy habit because ideas will develop with you.
Social media can help you.
I tell you a secret I use my social media platforms Instagram and LinkedIn as my tracker as I intentionally and regularly share my content and I look back to see how my month has been it helps me until now.
Sometimes I look back further to remember other things. That’s why I don’t like random posting on these platforms. When used properly you can benefit from them.
Unravel Your Year
Let me share with you this amazing exercise, I came across this amazing journal that you reviewed your year called “Unravel Your Year” this is the second year that I have done it.
It asks you several questions on how your year has been, how you feel about it, was as you expected, if not you what would have done differently etc all to end up with letting it go before you move to the next year and signing it off with a letter to your past self. I like this kind of closure or forgive-and-forget practice, taking away your lessons and moving on, a very powerful exercise in you letting the year go wholeheartedly.
Then the next part you welcome the new year, on what are you planning, what your expectations and how will you look after yourself and your goals then end it with a letter of visualisation to your future self.
That was the most shocking part for me as I had never done it before and to my surprise it was accurate. I even shared it on my social media to document my shocking discovery, I was so happy I wanted to create that memory.
Letter to myself in December 2021
Dear Aida,
What a year it has been!
It was truly a year of discovery; from January 2022 it was a journey. You just
went for it and enjoyed every step of it.
Yes, there was a feeling of doubt or felt why am I doing this moment, but you kept reminding yourself, freedom doesn’t come cheap!
You really enjoyed making your own plan. A flexible plan, but every step towards your goal or vision felt so sweet.
Staring at your year of discovery has been rewarding, you experimented and learned so much.
Having the courage to follow your dream. Goals and vision were so worth it- Well Done.
The journey continues for better and bigger things. Life gets better
Is it worth reviewing the whole year even if I do regularly
Yes, because you are looking at your year as an overview, a holistic approach, you are summarising the year. You give the year a name, for example, last year was a year of discovery, exploring and learning
This is a valuable exercise is a great starter before you start setting up goals for the year, it also has a planner for the year. I must admit I don’t really stick to monthly planners recently but I do record my tasks regularly. It is a work in progress 😊
You already reviewed your year regularly when you come to the end of the year, and you are already aware of how your year has been.
Can your words turn into reality?
Yes, my year was all about discovery, exploring and learning. As ai sketched how my year would be my mindset was ready for it.
This year’s package included an additional exercise called “Find You Word” an exercise over 5 days in which you make a list of words until you commit yourself to a word of the year. I already had a word shouted at me that stayed until the end “Action” this follows my year of discovery, exploring and learning. It is time for me to act on what I have and will learn.
Producing my writings and my content-creating materials on my social media platforms. Also, my next career moves as I am still in transition on creating my career.
What about you have you had any similar experiences or if you have done it share your thoughts?
